Chardonnay variety

Chardonnay is an international variety grown all over the world. It comes from the French region of Burgundy. Currently, Chardonnay is one of the most fashionable white varieties and, together with varieties such as Sauvignon, it is undoubtedly one of the best white varieties. Although it is not the most widespread variety in terms of planted areas of vineyards, it definitely leads in the number of wine-growing regions.

The name of the variety is derived from the name of the village of Chardonnay, located in Burgundy, in the department of Saône-et-Loire in the east of France. The term itself originates from the Latin "Cardonnacum", translated as "territory owned by a man named Cardus", and originated sometime at the end of the Roman period. At the same time, however, it also means "a place overgrown with thistles". The Mâconnais region, where the village of Chardonnay is located, may be the place from where the variety spread throughout the world, although some ampelographers   designate the Chablis region as the place of origin of the variety (also Burgundian).
