Teroldego is an original grape variety from Trentino, grown mainly in the Piana Rotaliana area, in highly breathable soils rich in nutrients, in a microclimate influenced by the fresh air flowing from Tonale. It is a red variety with an intense fruity taste. Distillation of the grapes in a discontinuous alembic with a water bath gives a white, clear grappa with a very distinct aroma of blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. Its taste is soft with a firm body and with a balanced aftertaste of forest fruit. It is an autochthonous variety that is grown in the alluvial soils of the River Noce, in the area called "Campo Rotaliano" between the towns of Mezzolombardo, Mezzocorona and Grumo, where the environment is optimal for it. The first mention of Teroldeg dates back to 1300, and the Council of Trent (1545-1563) was the first occasion when the variety gained international fame. Rumor has it that the "Terodola" vine came to Trentino together with the mulberry tree introduced by the migrant population. It is genetically related to the Lagrein, Marzemino and Syrah varieties, all of which are probably of oriental origin. Cesare Battisti (1875-1916) described the Piana Rotaliana area as "the most beautiful vineyard in Europe", which, thanks to the composition of the soil, the flooding of the river Noca and the specific micro-climatic conditions, predisposes even today to the production of wines of exceptional quality. Outside of its traditional area, it does not achieve such organoleptic properties that led to the designation of Teroldeg Rotaliano "Prince" of Trentino.
Why do I like it?
Pure, fine grappa from the red Teroldego variety, a typical variety of southern Trentino.
