Legend has it that the variety got its name from the Roman phrase "via Gehennae", which means "way to hell". And to this day, Viognier is grown directly on the island of Vis off the Dalmatian coast under the name Vugava or Bugava. However, according to others, it was the Greeks who began to cultivate this variety by going up the Rhone valley, starting with the steep slopes of the Côte -Rôtie, Ampuis and Condrieu.
